Product development —"right first time"

We have cut product development in half. In the traditional development cycle a concept was developed, then designed, then prototyped and then tested. In the event of error or design modification, the entire cycle was repeated until the product was successful. Each cycle would take three to four weeks with a total development time of several months.

Today Tenneco works differently. The concept is first simulated through a model and then analyzed through computer simulation. Once the optimum characteristics of this virtual product are calculated, it is designed, prototyped and tested—the "Right first time" approach. The typical analysis cycle now takes one to two weeks and the hardware cycle the same for a total of four to six weeks…less than half the time taken previously.
