Diagnostic - Regular check of the exhaust systems

As professionals we have a duty to the community to make sure that the vehicles we repair and service produce no more emission and noise than their original design allowed—and that they do not contravene legislation governing vehicle emission standards and noise levels.

Tests have shown that a car in poor condition and in need of engine repair or emission control system service, can produce 2 to 3 times the emissions it was designed to generate.

Regular checking is essential.

  • A faulty exhaust produces excessive noise levels.
  • In extreme cases it can harm the health of the car's occupants by allowing toxic exhaust gases to enter the passenger compartment.
  • The good exhaust system also contributes the maximum engine power output with minimum fuel consumption—a faulty exhaust system can result in power loss and fuel waste.
  • If the vehicle breaks down, or if it contravenes vehicle emission legislation, the garage may be blamed for not inspecting the exhaust during the last service check.

Exhaust systems need to be checked regularly

Exhaust system inspection:

  • Start from the engine & work along the system
  • Visually inspect for excess corrosion
  • Check for leaks by listening & feeling for a breeze
  • 'Thump' or tap the system to check for loose or collapsed & clogged baffles

Exhaust check points:

  • Is the correct silencer fitted
  • Check for exhaust leaks
  • Check for flex fractures
  • Check system mountings
  • Check for clogged or burnt out baffles
