Types - Down Pipe

Down Pipe

The down pipe carries the gases and vapor from the exhaust manifold or header to another component downstream in the system.

On late model vehicles, the trend is to fit twin skin pipes. These have an inner and outer pipe separated by a small air gap which serves to insulate the inner tube. This ensures higher insulation to protect the outside and the underbody from the heat and results in better "light-off" of the catalytic converter. This construction is known as the "Air Gap Pipe".

"Light-off"—the chemical processes within the catalytic converter do not start until a certain temperature is reached. This temperate point is approximately 300°C to 350°C and is called light-off temperature.
