| Most modern vehicles are still powered by reciprocating piston engines with four, five, six or eight cylindesr.
To power the vehicle, the engine produces hot exhaust gases (up to 1,300°C. ) from each cylinder. As each exhaust cylinder valve opens in turn, this gas flows into the exhaust manifold.
The manifold is designed of cast iron and is mounted to the engine cylinder head. It comprises several individual passageways corresponding to each individual valve's exhaust port. These merge into one, forming the outlet. |
