All about Exhaust System
The Role of exhaust systems
Exhaust systems are designed to direct the gases produced by the combustion process out of the engine and to reduce noise and pollution.
1. Emission control
Pollution is hazardous to health and the environment. In Europe, federal and state legislation exists limiting the emission of various polluting gases produced by vehicles. All cars are built to comply with this legislation and have various built-in emission control systems and devices that eliminate or greatly reduce vehicle emissions.
2. Noise reduction
The drive-by noise level of vehicles is subject to similar legislation. The current drive-by noise level of 74dB(A) was introduced in 1995. This level will be reduced in the future.
In almost every country, vehicles must be tested for compliance.
3. Improved performance
The exhaust system directs gases produced by combustion out of the engine. By ensuring a continuous, smooth flow of exhaust gases out of the engine, the exhaust system improves engine performance.
4. Protecting passengers
The exhaust system protects passengers by preventing emission gases from entering the vehicle's passenger compartment. |
